Risen from Ashes, the first in the Thieves of Elysium series, introduces Phoenix, a courageous firefighter and honorable family man, blackmailed into going against all he believes in.
After an age-old secret society known as The Guild forces him to steal Babylonian artifacts under the cover of arson in exchange for his family’s safety, Phoenix discovers his own ties to the ancient order of thieves.
When the thieves’ guild doesn’t hold up its end of the bargain to keep his family safe, Phoenix’s wife Lauren is forced to reveal buried secrets of her own as the two must traverse the globe to rescue their daughter. They infiltrate the fantastical thieves’ paradise of Elysium deep within the earth, navigate a dangerous labyrinth beneath the Basilica of Saint Mark in Venice, and discover the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in Iraq, uncovering long-hidden truths about his family along the way.
Despite his burning desire to expose the thieves, the Guild may hold the answers Phoenix is so desperately seeking. To have any hope of saving his family, Phoenix must go on an extraordinary journey across the world in a race to discover an antediluvian treasure that will change his life forever.

The author has created a fresh, magical new world bringing it to life in the ‘Thieves of Elysium’. And he has done so by letting us experience the mystery, awe and wonder through a very real character that could be any one of us. The story itself is well written and engaging from the very first page, making it difficult to put it down until the end. With a fast pace, original storyline, I can’t wait for the next book to follow Phoenix on his next adventure.Product details

I stumbled upon this book when searching for a new author and I am glad I did. Definitely a page turner that kept me intrigued until the very end. I highly recommend!!
Great book by a great author. Finally something to read with a new idea instead of the same old detective novels. This is a unique story that incorporates real life for many mixed with a world many dream of or about. Alexander is definitely an author to follow.
This book came highly recommended to me and I wasn't disappointed! It was a fast paced ride from beginning to end, good character development, enough details to really get you into the plot line, and the ending really sets the series up for a great story arc. I don't want to say much more because I don't want to ruin any of the surprises this book has in store for you, but if you like fantasy, adventure, secret societies and a dose of ancient mythos thrown in, pick up this book and give it a try!
This is a truly enjoyable book. Great plot, many twists and surprises, with an ending that is heartbreaking but you know there will be a sequel to remedy this tragedy. Phoenix and Lauren are very complex characters who work at their relationship and have something that time can't erase, so the reader is led to believe they will find each other again. I love archeological mysteries, and this is one of the best I have read for quite a while.
Simply said, this was an extremely compelling book. Author Michael Alexander not only captured a unique story with brilliant descriptions, action and characters, but it's very clear from the start that Alexander knows how to write visually. The characters are imprinted in our minds coupled with a talent for outstanding word choice and succinct, tight descriptive sentences. Never a dull moment in action or dialogue, either. Finally a story that is visual and hard to put down. I'm ready to read the next installment in Alexander's Thieves of Elysium saga. Bravo!
Meet Phoenix, Lauren and their six year old daughter Autumn. Happily married, living in LA, Phoenix, an experienced firefighter, has been bribed by the Guild to help Marco to steal three items in three separate fires one of which is the Diamond of Sorrow. Lauren begins to suspect that the fires are connected and so does her own research. What is Lauren's secret? She is the daughter of Lord Alasdair who just happens to be Lord of Elysium. Not only that but she is probably one of the MOST talented thieves the Guild had! Why did she leave and choose a normal life in California? Naturally the Guild want her back and it looks like they will do anything to get her back including kidnapping Autumn.
In the meantime Phoenix is wanted by the Odyssey for his involvement in the fires. Sir Walter Gifford. a Brit, is not going to give up the chase. How did they find out it was Phoenix aiding the thievery of the precious items? The Odyssey has created ASET (All-Seeing-Eye-Technology).
Very family oriented, with Autumn in the hands of Lauren's father, Phoenix and Lauren work together to try and get her back. What is Lord Alasdair obsessed with? How about Duke Valafar? As for Marco, is he loyal to the Guild or not? Where does Lord McAllister come into all this and what connection does he have with Phoenix? If you're against Lauren, you had better watch out for her daggers which are laced with the Blood of Medusa. One stab from them and you will be turned into stone!
If you, as a reader, like a book with an ending then you are going to be sorely disappointed with this one. It has an ending of sorts (sad) but you will want to read more. This is Book 1 of 2.
Mostly well written, this is a very descriptive, fast paced, suspenseful book which is easy to read once you get into it. The language is mild with the odd "bad" word. There is no detailed sex scenes but Phoenix and Lauren are very much in love and so some description of the lead up to sex is read about with the rest left to the reader's imagination. Tastefully done and NOT a major focus of the book. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz
A friend of mine turned me on to this book. Once again, I'm glad I trusted his judgment. This story and Michael Alexander's style is very immersive. The story moves along at a good pace yet the details are vivid and compatible thru-out. As a fan of history, real and mythological, I was not disappointed. He has done his homework. This story is one you want to be leave in and his approach feels honest. It's hard to describe, but I felt trust in the author and found myself giving him control and letting him do all the work. I was just flowing along effortlessly through the story. That is a rare talent. By the quality of this work, it is very evident he put a tremendous amount of work into it.
Now, back to my friend, he knows the author. He told me all the reviews that were written here two years ago have vanished. Including the one I wrote in April 2014. He asked if I could re write it to support this author. Charity aside, after reading his work I truly believe in his talent and want to encourage more. If he can keep on his current trajectory, I have no doubt he will be very successful. I am now headed over to buy the second book.
Here is the original review I wrote back in April 2014
I fervently hope Michael Alexander is hunched over his keyboard 24/7 to bring us more literary goodness. The thing about reading a is that you have no physical sensation as to how far along you are in the story. I was so into it, I had no idea how close to the end I really was. So, the ending was a bit like turning a corner and walking into a brick wall which kinda threw me into frantic denial. I highly recommend it.
